Australia is an island, a country and the smallest continent. The word 'Australia' comes from the Latin australis meaning 'southern'. It is located in the Southern Hemisphere between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are an estimated 22 million people living in Australia (January 2010), most of them living by the eastern and south-eastern coasts. Away from the coasts, the land is often very hot and dry and difficult to live on. Australians call this land the outback.

English is the most commonly spoken language in Australia. The unit of currency is the Australian Dollar. Canberra is the capital of Australia although the biggest and most well-known city is Sydney.
